KAHULUI — Mike Yasak was racing on his home course in epic conditions on Sunday at Kahana Beach Park in the Maui Slalom Nationals.

For the second day in a row, it showed.

The 62-year-old Yasak swept the semi-pro and men’s 60 divisions at the Goya Pro-Am on Sunday after doing the same in the Dakine Classic on Saturday.

Racers count their best three of four heat results in each division each day. Today, national champions will be crowned after the Neil Pryde Slalom event.

Yasak has been able to count three wins in each division on both days.

Mike Yasak of Kula leads Terry Beentjes (NZ 427) of New Zealand and Eric Lemire (FRA 26) of France in a semi-pro heat.

“This is classic Maui conditions,” Yasak said. “Powered up on smallest sail, chopping the ocean. Turtles. You know the guys who come over here, they’re not used to it, but I think that’s why they come here — to get experience in this. Because if you can race on Maui — and I hear this all the time — you can race anywhere.”

Kanaha is hosting a U.S. Windsurfing national event for the fourth time, joining a list that also includes 1993, 1998 and 2006.

Maximillion Brunetti traveled from Italy to race in the semi-pro division, where he finished second to Yasak. The 42-year-old was also eighth in the men’s 40 division on Sunday.

“The conditions were very, very choppy, a little bit hard sometimes,” Brunetti said. “But very, very good. Wind stronger in the afternoon, but amazing. … Epic.”

Peter Slate, a former standout on the Professional Windsurfers Association tour who has lived on Maui for 25 years, won the pro division for the second straight day. He won the men’s 40 title on Saturday and was second to Peter John on Sunday.

Angela Cochran (20) leads Tamara Bockius over the finish line in the women’s open division.

“I was on the world tour in the early ’90s, and when I finished up there, I started working for Neil Pryde, so kind of windsurfing has been in my life for many, many years,” Slate said. “It’s always brought me a lot of good luck and what can I say? We are just very fortunate to have this event and these conditions to race in.”

When asked if the conditions were perfect, the 48-year-old Slate did not hesitate.

“Absolutely, Maui just delivers year after year,” he said. “And we’re very fortunate to have an international contingent that comes and races. So, it’s always fun to see everybody. Once in a while, we will get a bona fide PWA racer so we can kind of see where we are, how far back we are from the real pros.

“This is flat-out the best slalom venue in the world, in my opinion.”

John has lived on Maui for the last 19 years after moving from New Zealand. He won the men’s 40 title and was third amongst the pros.

Mike Yasak turns past the final buoy in winning a semi-pro heat Sunday.

“It was about as good as it gets,” John said. “Yesterday was windier, but it was pretty close. Super choppy though, so it makes it a challenge. Super fun.”

Mark Boersma, 31, has been coming to Maui to compete in the Maui Race Series each summer since he was 10 years old. The Michigan resident finished second in the pro division and won the men’s 19-39 division on Sunday.

“It just steadily built from the morning on, windier, windier, windier,” Boersma said. “At the end it was the windiest day we’ve had so far. It’s really exciting.”

While he doesn’t live here, Boersma certainly had a hometown advantage like most of the others atop the division lists.
