Eight windsurfers from around the world have travelled to Co Donegal to take part in the Red Bull Storm Chase.
The event, at Magheraroarty Beach, challenges them to compete and perform tricks in extremely stormy conditions.
The riders are battling 115kmh conditions and huge waves.
The windsurfers on show are: Philip Köster, Jaeger Stone, Leon Jamaer, Thomas Traversa, Dany Bruch, Robby Swift, Ricardo Campello and Adam Lewis.
They are judged on jumps, wave riding and execution of tricks.
They have competed in three rounds of short heats on Monday, which had them in the water for around 20 minutes.
Wave size reached mast-high, and gusty winds hovered between 30 and 60 knots – approximately 55 to 110kmh.
Köster currently leads the standings on his Red Bull Storm Chase debut from Stone, Jamaer and Traversa.
He said: “It was absolutely epic windsurfing – tricky, challenging and cold – but definitely epic”.
During each heat, riders collect points for each jump and wave ride.
At the end of competition, they receive points on a one to 10 score for their top five scores from each category.
A five-point bonus will go to the single biggest jump of the entire contest and five points for the best wave ride.
Most riders opted to rig sails around 3.7 square metres, with others such as Köster breaking out a 4.2 sqm.
The event will finish up on Tuesday, when even more strong wind and waves are forecast.
