While humans have been cultivating cannabis since 400 BCE, more than 2,000 years later, most of us still don’t have a grasp of what’s what in today’s blossoming CBD industry, and the science is still pretty confusing. Perhaps it’s time to get informed so we can know the real stuff from the snake oils.
That’s precisely what Hawaii Island’s Ulu-boi Napeahi and Oahu’s Flynn Novak did before discovering Himiko Organics’ ethical and organic CBD products. Flynn became a bit of a CBD connoisseur in the last few years before discovering some obvious differences with Himiko.
And while we could certainly go into detail explaining Himiko’s tech and chemistry — like how the nano-emulsion in their tinctures has 50% higher bioavailability — or praise their CBD Relief Cooling Roll On Gel — we’ll spare you the science class and let Flynn give his thoughts instead. Surfline caught up with him between four-hour sessions at Rocky Rights.
Surfline: What’s the story with you and Himiko?
Flynn Novak: Well, I’ve actually been taking some kind of CBD oil for the last five years. I’ve seriously sampled every single type that I could, mostly doing the tinctures (oil and dropper). I think people are starting to get clued into the benefits of CBD oil, even though there’s been a lot of companies that have come out. But with Himiko, I first really started seeing a difference when taking a few drops of the tincture before bed. I really felt like I was getting great sleep, because I was suddenly dreaming a lot more. That, and feeling so regenerated. So, I linked up with Himiko purely because I already had such an interest in sampling CBD, and they can boast more origin story and lab-tested results. And it’s 100% organic, from an organic farm.
People like organic.
Definitely. Once I started trying Himiko, I could feel such a difference, especially with the nano technology they have. I was actually feeling effects in my brain, like more cognitive clarity. It was wild! That’s what really made me stay with them. It feels like my brain is operating on a way higher gear. I’m just flowing. I mean, their stuff helps lube up your joints really well, too, but for me, I love what I’m feeling in my mind. Don’t get me wrong — it’s not psychotropic or anything [laughs].
Isn’t your dad sampling it, too?
Yeah, what’s really funny is that my dad is old school. He doesn’t believe anything anyone tells him, except for the doctor. I forced him to experiment with it. He usually has high blood pressure, but he started taking the Himiko tincture, went to the doc and his blood pressure is down to a way healthier level. Just to test it, though, he stopped taking it, went back to the doc, and it’s back up to a shitty level. He’s got his own blood pressure machine at home now and he takes the tincture — a super low dose — and he’s loving it.
So clearly, it’s good for surfers. Any other activities you’ve found Himiko works well with?
I’ve been taking it before I go free-diving and I find that it helps alleviate some natural anxiety you might get holding your breath for a really long time while diving really deep. It’s been great for that. I just think it’s something everyone could use in their daily routine, there’s so many benefits. They’re subtle, but you’ll definitely notice over time.
