Packing boards, beanies and boots for some frozen shoreline has never been a big draw for most wave chasers. But of course, there are folks who surf on the regular in brain-freeze conditions. They live in icy climates where the 20-minute process of climbing into a rubber straightjacket is just another part of the pre-surf ritual. Chances are they haven’t fully felt their toes since the pre-Kardashian era.
Most who ride waves in surfing’s established warm-to-moderate-temp meccas don’t book trips to icy destinations. Hell, for the same price you could fly to Panama. But there is something to be said for the beauty and solitude of scoring a winter swell on a snow-covered beach with the faint smell of chimney smoke in the stiff offshore winds.
So maybe you’re interested in setting out for waves in the Aleutian Islands or New England, the Canadian Maritimes or Pacific Northwest. Maybe you’re just an ice-bearded local. Even if you’re none of the above, temps are likely to drop over the course of the upcoming winter months, and you’ll likely need more than a 3/2 and flip flops to stay warm. We’ve collected some gear to warm your heart (and everything else) this winter.

XCEL INFINITY 5/4 HOODED FULLSUIT
This is a good suit for getting started in the cold at a good price. Made with Xcel’s eco-friendly Nanoprene Lite, the chest features Radiant Rebound around the core, a metal lining under the textile that blocks cold temps from penetrating the outer layer and reflects heat generated within the wetsuit back towards the body. The bottom portion is constructed with Xcel’s Thermolite Ultra Flex. They use a machine-heated pressure process to bond the tape directly to the suit at the seems. This is a solid suit that Xcel recommends for water in the 40s. If you plan on heading to higher latitudes, consider the 6/5.

STICKY BUMPS TOUR SERIES COLD WATER WAX
The same way that tropical wax is engineered to not melt right off your board on the equator, coldwater surf wax is designed to not just harden up in the water. For good traction, wax has to be somewhat soft and pliable and that’s what the Tour Series Cold provides. Made for all water under 60 degrees, it works down to the 30s. Apply and reapply.

BRIXTON HEIST BEANIE
They are functional in pretty much any weather less than 60 degrees, but there’s no reason to even step outside without a good beanie in the real icebox months. Brixton is always a solid choice, not only keeping the dome warm, but this acrylic knot is stylish as well.

SOLITE 8MM CUSTOM FIRE BOOTS
But while the fit and weight were great when they came out, they didn’t provide the warmth when the water dropped down into the frigid 30s. This year, Solite has developed an 8 mm boot, still light and comfortable, just better insulated for the extreme days.

O’NEILL HYBRID UTILITY JACKET
The Hybrid Utility has water-repelling HyperDry membrane and taped critical seams. It’s considered “hybrid” because of the side welt venting that works with the underarm zippers to drastically enhance ventilation when the temperature rises. This jacket is a good deal and can be your riding piece as well, with a removable powder skirt and adjustable hood. Invest in a good snow shell for before and after your plunge.

HYDROFLASK 20 OZ COFFEE WONDER
Using TempShield™ double-wall vacuum insulation, that drink will stay piping hot for up to 12 hours, which means it will still be warm after your session, which is the most critical. It’s compatible with the Hydroflask Wide Mouth Flex Cap, Hydro Flip™ Lid, and Wide Mouth Straw Lid with Lifetime Warranty.

PATAGONIA MEN’S LINE LOGO RIDGE UPRISAL HOODY

RIP CURL 7/5 MM FLASHBOMB MITTS
Made of stretch E3 neoprene, these mittens also feature silicone palm grip, internal gasket seal, a smooth exterior, sealed and taped seams, and a Flash Dry lining for extra warmth. They dry fast too.

BURTON MIDWEIGHT BASELAYER CREW TOP
A good base layer doesn’t just keep you warm, but dry, keeping wicking perspiration away from your body that would otherwise give you a chill. A good wicking keeps that day-ruining dampness off your body while you’re checking spots or headed out for a hot meal after you surf.

STANCE MOUNTAN 2-PACK SNOW SOCKS
These feature Stance’s Toe Box Oven™ and the Terry-looped feet, heels and toes provide extra cushion. Seamless closure eliminates any rubbing. Again, an investment in good snow gear means you can use it not only for coldwater adventures but for powder chasing this winter. And there are two pairs…
