BODYBOARDING: Sunshine Coasters were in the thick of the action in the second and final leg of the state championships at Kings Beach on Sunday.
Gold Coast’s Luke Jackson snared the open men’s title, ahead of Mount Coolum’s Adam Keegan.
The latter won the event last year but had to settle for second this time around, while Daniel Leyshon (Helensvale) and Dale Akehurst (Gold Coast) filled the minor placings.
Jackson was delighted.
“I’m incredibly stoked to win the open men’s title,” he said via a Surfing Queensland press release. “It’s my first open men’s Queensland title so it feels great.
“We’ve had awesome waves at both events of the series, and today’s conditions were super fun.”
The first leg of competition was held at the Gold Coast in April while the second event was held amid a S swell and just relatively light winds.
Sunshine Coasters featured extensively in other divisions.
Moffat Beach’s Tobey Ring won the under-16 open division and was runner-up in the under-18 boys section behind Gold Coast’s Kye Bailey. Blair McDuff (Moffatt Beach) and Lachie Porter (Buddina) claimed minor placings in that division.
Peregian Beach’s Jai Taylor was victorious in the under-14 open competition, finishing ahead of his brother Zayde and Ryan Inglis (Buderim).
He won on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.
Yandina Creek’s Gary Thatcher and Wurtulla’s Donny Robinson featured in the drop knee division, finishing behind Daniel Leyshon (Helensvale).
Gold Coast’s Britt Ladley claimed victory in the open women’s division, after winning both legs of the series.
Many of the bodyboarders secured places in the state team for the national championships, to be held at the Tweed Coast in August.
