PORT Macquarie are well in the mix to take out the 2019 Teams Challenge, but they’ll have to overcome the Port Old Boys and Newcastle to do so. Heading into the third and final day of the long weekend competition, there is a struck match between the three teams. Port Macquarie’s Brodey Brockman proved too good in his early heat on Sunday at Lighthouse Beach, amassing a combined two-wave score of 11.23 which was too good for Forster’s Jeremy Coombes. It kept the hosts in a battle for top spot. “I got a couple of good waves; it was a bit hard to get some of the sets but was good fun,” he said. “There were a couple of sets pushing four to five foot and some were a bit wobbly and not as good; the smaller ones were a bit better pushing inside. “It’s all local knowledge, looking for the right waves and watching the heats beforehand and then going from there to build a score.” Brockman said the interest in the competition had grown significantly in 12 months. “Last year there wasn’t as many clubs that came to do it, but this year we’ve got a lot a lot of people coming from Coffs and have a full women’s team too which is really good,” he said. “Didn’t really expect much, but it’s turned out a lot better than we thought.” He expected the competition could do right down to the wire on Monday. “Towards the end we’ve got a couple of tough heats coming up so it should be really close in the next six or seven heats,” he said. “We’re a good chance for the first place.” Brockman admitted he felt some pressure to contribute to his team being one of the younger members alongside some of the pros. “There’s a lot more pressure on me to step up and surf as good as them; it’s always tough,” he said. And did the talented youngster expect a late charge from the Old Boys? “The old boys reckon they’ve got it in the bag every year, but I think they’ll be jumping in about fourth,” he said. “I don’t think they’ll be getting a podium finish this year.” While you’re with us, you can now receive updates straight to your inbox from the Port Macquarie News.
