After competing in Saturday morning rounds of the Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro at the Oceanside Pier, Hamilton was surrounded by a wave of supporters despite being eliminated in her heat.
Many waded into the ocean.
Even with the presence of potential Tokyo Olympians, Hamilton got the biggest reception at an event touted as the largest female surfing event in the world. (See results here.)

Hamilton — subject of a new documentary — scored a 6.7 in Round 3 and was ousted by world No. 1 Carissa Moore of Hawaii, the defending champion who scored 13.10. Also eliminated was 16-year-old Alyssa Spencer of Encinitas, a local favorite.
Three-time world champion Carissa Moore advanced to Round 5 with 10.77 heat. But the day’s highest score was by Australia’s Nikki Van Dijk — a 15.6 in Heat 3 of Round 4. That included an 8.33 ride on her second wave of the 25-minute heat. (She also had a 15.17 in Round 3.)
Upsets lead to the eliminations of Malia Manuel, Paige Hareb, Sage Erickson, Philippa Anderson, Silvana Lima, Brisa Hennessy, Alyssa Spencer, and Alana Blanchard.
Competition resumes at 8 a.m.Sunday.
Access to all events and entertainment — including the Nissan Concert Series, headlined by Natasha Bedingfield and the Super Girl Gamer Pro esports tournament and female empowerment — are free for the three-day festival that ends Sunday.

Of the six Olympic hopefuls, only three advanced to Sunday’s rounds — Moore, Lakey Peterson of Santa Barbara and Caroline Marks of Boca Raton, Florida.
Former Surfer Girl champion Tatiana Weston-Webb of Brazil also advanced with a score of 12.43, the best in her heat.
Also scoring well Saturday was Kirra Pinkerton of San Clemente who scored 14.47 total, including an 8.17 on one wave.
On Friday, current No. 3 Zahli Kelly, 15, of Australia started Round 2 in dynamic form. She scored a 12.00 heat total to start.
“To be honest, that was a dream start to this event,” said Kelly, more than 100 entering the World Surf League competition. “It’s pretty cool to have a seed into these higher events and sitting in a good spot on the rankings because if you do well, it can really lead somewhere.”
Reigning World Junior Champion and Qualifying Series No. 10 Pinkerton in Round 2 debuted with a sterling 15.27 heat total, leaving runner-up Samantha Sibley of San Clemente needing a 9.54 to overtake her.

Not all the higher-seeded competitors were as fortunate. Australian Freya Prumm delivered a heavy blow in Round 2 Heat 4, helping eliminate Qualifying Series veteran Bailey Nagy with Leticia Canales Bilbao surviving a near-shocker. Facing a similar fate as Nagy, Alessa Quizon (HAW) was eliminated from competition.
Notable entries Saturday included Tia Blanco, Basque Country’s Nadia Erostarbe, Puerto Rico’s Havana Cabero – who helped eliminate Qualifying Series veterans Brianna Cope) and Tanika Hoffman, Sophie McCulloch, along with two big performances from Gabriela Bryan and Kirra-Belle Olsson.
The event is being livestreamed and archived on YouTube.
