RUMBLE on the Reef will be back bigger than ever this year.
What started as a skateboarding competition will bring on four times the sports, adding BMX, wakeboarding and wind surfing to its catalogue in a two-week action sport extravaganza.
The skateboarding competition will also be the Australian Championship final – a first for Mackay.
The best skaters from across the country will appear at the Mackay Sugar Bowl on September 21 for a three-day competition.
Organiser of the event Donny Fraser said the Rumble on the Reef competition would attract people from across the country based on the state event’s success over the past two years.
“We had the state titles here for the past two years, but now we have the winners of all the state titles in one place,” he said.
“Everyone did such a good job at building this skateboarding competition as a sports festival.
“There are so many people who wanted to be a part of it and compete in it that it already outgrew its name.”
Mr Fraser said Mackay would likely hold onto the Australian Championship hosting rights for years.
“Mackay will probably lead the way with its facilities because, honestly, how do you build something as good as that again,” he said.
