SOME of WA’s best bodyboard talent is set to converge on Mandurah Wedge this weekend.
Mandurah Wedge is known as a bodyboarding mecca.
It will be the site for the opening event of the SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles presented by Good Earth.
Former State and National Title winners will take on hometown talents including, Davis Blackwell (Dawesville), George Humphreys (Halls Head) and Jordan Ihmys (Falcon). The trio will look to milk every drop of their local knowledge when competition kicks off on Saturday.
“The sand is in all the right places at the moment and the forecast is looking pretty fun,” Blackwell said.
“I haven’t competed in WA State Titles for a couple of years, but I’m keen to take some of the new young groms coming out of the woodwork.”
Mandurah Wedge is one of the most consistent waves in the Peel region and provides some of the most high intensity and performance bodyboard waves in Australia. Mandurah Wedge’s rocky amphitheatre provides a truly unique competition settings, with waves, water and riders flying only meters away from spectators and officials.
City of Mandurah Mayor Rhys Williams said Mandurah had some of the best beaches in Australia.
“We are proud to be able showcase our amazing coastline,” he said.
“It is a great opportunity for our local community to experience elite sport of this nature and I encourage everyone to get down and show our support.”
The SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles offers competitors a chance to compete in some of the best waves the state has to offer, whilst mixing it up with some of the best up and coming talent in WA.
Mandurah surfers impress at WA Surf Masters Titles
Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks said bodyboarding has been seen as surfing’s little brother for a long time.
“But to have some of WA’s big names involved this weekend is really cool,” he said.
“We’re looking forward to seeing how the local guys will perform up against the riders travelling from Perth and the South-West to compete.”
