MANDURAH Baptist College’s surfing program is hitting goals after two students booked their place in the Sunsmart WA School Surfing Titles.
Quinn McColl and Kai Maggs won the Senior Boys Year 11 and 12 event at the Peel qualifier on August 3.
“I was super stoked,” Quinn said.
“I think it was my fifth year of doing it and it was the first time I’ve taken it out which was pretty good.”
The event involved the two students surfing as a pair, with the judges combining their best waves to get an overall score.
Josh O’Dwyer, Taj Wyburd, Ava Richardson and Jemma Thomson also put in an outstanding performance at the qualifiers finishing runners up in their divisions to have the college punching above its weight in second overall on the day.
Quinn and Kai were introduced to surfing by their fathers and have been surfing together since they were kids.
“My dad got me into surfing at an early age, and I’ve been doing comps since I was super young,” Quinn said.
“Once you get a sick wave, it will stick with you for the rest of your life.
“I found a passion for it.”
Quinn has been in the surf program since the start and has seen it grow and give other passionate surfers a place to make friends.
They are undoubtedly nervous about competing at the state titles, but Kai is looking forward to taking on the best the state has to offer.
“There’s going to be a lot of good competition, but it’s good to push yourself,” he said.
Regardless of what happens at the titles on August 28, they know they will be back in the water, searching for killer waves again.
“I’m sure we would both love to become professionals, but I’m not sure … but I’m probably going to keep doing it all through my life because it’s something I love,” Quinn said.
