A surfer accidentally took a ride on a 6.5 foot shark and was bitten by the giant animal at New Smyrna Beach in Florida on Tuesday.
Donald Walsh, a chiropractor who lives in Mims, Florida, was surfing in the water when he suddenly caught air on a wave, only to realize that his board was actually a massive shark, the New York Post reported. A representative of Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that Walsh “landed on a shark in waist-deep water and got bitten,” at approximately 11:55 a.m. EST on Aug. 27.
“It felt like a freight train hit me and the first thing I could think of was to literally push him away from me and as soon as it happened, I grabbed my board and started to paddle as fast as I could,” Walsh told ClickOrlando.com in an interview.
Walsh was treated for cuts on his left hand and calf at the scene.
Walsh, who enjoys surfing, will not let this shark accident stop him from pursuing the water sport.
“I’ll get back in as soon as the stitches come out and the wounds are closed up,” Walsh added. “I’ll get back in the water.”
According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), Volusia County is home to the most unprovoked shark attacks in Florida from 1982 to the present. So far, 303 unprovoked shark attacks have occurred in Volusia County over the past 37 years.
