Members of Kenosha’s Holy Assembly Church, featuring a superheroes theme, paraded through the Uptown-Brass neighborhood Saturday to present its eighth annual Back to School Bash in Lincoln Park.

Sponsored by Holy Assembly Church, 2006 60th St., the event also brought the neighborhood together to serve as volunteers on a sunny summer day in the park.

Led by Great Lakes Naval Base Color Guard congregation members, supporters and volunteers, who wore Avengers costumes, took to the streets. They gathered residents to the free event that featured food, games, prizes, a bounce house, free backpacks and school supplies.

The parade started a 11 a.m. at the former Pick ‘n Save supermarket behind Brass Elementary School. The school supplies were presented at 1 p.m. while the other activities lasted through much of the day, ending at 4 p.m. 

Pastor Juliette Hicks said they expected to give away between 300 to 400 backpacks. 

The backpacks also included gift certificates for food and desserts from McDonald’s, Culver’s and several other partners.

Hicks said it was a perfect day to bring people to the park. She was joined by the Rev. Marie Rivers and the Rev. Ben Williams, who prepared food and organized events.  

The event also featured gospel concerts with several performers, including Mel Campbell, Valerie Campbell and the musical group Those Funny Little People.
